Arrested Democracy

I’ve appreciated the feedback and questions on my previous post concerning the Maldives.   Again, I’m no expert and I can only imagine how difficult it is to live in a society where governance is in such a state of calamity.  Sadly, it seems that it is getting into ‘tit for tat’ stage between the two parties and truth is often a first victim.

As such, I find this report, ‘Arrested Democracy’ a compelling summary of recent political events.  Written by a team of international legal experts it soberly reviews both the events and claims of both sides.  It concludes that there is sufficient evidence surrounding the transfer of power in February 2012 to to cause extreme damage to the credibility of the current government.

Most worryingly, they conclude that Maldivian security forces have committed a number of human rights violations in the months that have passed since the transfer of power.

I’m no journalist nor politician.  From a Maldivian perspective I am just a humble tourist who wonders how such a beautiful country can give rise to such malignant hegemony.
